The College of Liberal Arts is looking for an experienced Academic Advisor to join our team!

Our advisors work holistically with students to identify their strengths, clarify their interests, and explore available areas of study in the context of the liberal arts while planning for timely degree completion.
Our advising model is one positioned at the intersection of development and learning, drawing on multiple theoretical perspectives in the professional literature (for example, self-authorship, appreciative advising, advising as teaching, high-impact educational practices). Advisors provide students with a balance of support and challenge, engaging in a professional practice that is highly contextualized, nuanced, and responsive to the individual learner's preparation, ability, and interests. All the while emphasizing multicultural competence, in line with the broader university and college goals of diversity and inclusion.
Advisors are responsive to collegiate and university goals in the areas of retention and timely student progress.
Maintain a professional advising caseload of approximately 300 CLA students (with a mix of students in all four years of progress, and in a variety of majors/minors) (75%)
- Utilizing the operative model (described above), provide appropriate challenge and support to each assigned student as needed to facilitate students having a successful academic experience. This includes helping students get progressively more sophisticated in their decision making about current academic plans and eventual post-graduation plans, including careers. Help students assess program options in relation to their strengths, interests, and abilities.
- Incorporate interpersonal, multicultural, and communication skills to build rapport with students to create a productive working relationship between the student and the advisor.
- Demonstrate and advance the value of a liberal arts education. Articulate comprehensive knowledge about the curriculum, academic programs (majors, minors, certificates), degree requirements, and engagement options (study abroad, service learning, internships, research). Apply this knowledge and understanding to student interactions with the goal of furthering student success.
- Encourage students' utilization of the college's and the university's academic support and engagement resources to maximize their undergraduate experience.
- Conduct timely outreach to students, utilizing the college's electronic alert system. Generate individual student outreach strategies to foster students' degree progress.
- Conduct analytic review of student records to certify students' academic standing in relation to academic probation, suspension, and degree completion.
- Uphold the integrity of academic and curricular policies established by the University and the College. Exercise informed judgment to apply exceptions when warranted.
- Be responsive to College and University goals in a dynamic environment, including outcomes related to retention, timely degree completion, support to students in academic difficulty, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and participation in key engagement opportunities.
Participation in Programs and Initiatives (15%)
- Participate in and help conduct unit programs such as orientation, first-year experience, commencement, workshops, family programming, and student employment.
- Participate in unit, collegiate, and university events and initiatives, such as review of scholarship applications, prospective student programming, and career and internship events.
- Collect, summarize, and evaluate data related to trends and make recommendations for improved student service.
Service and Engagement in the field of Academic Advising (10%)
- Stay informed on current trends and philosophies in academic advising and student support through participating in professional development events and activities in the unit, College, University, broader community and scholarly activities.
- Service on unit, College, or University committees as requested.
Required Qualifications for Academic Advisor:
- Completed Master's degree or equivalent.
- One year of college-level advising or teaching experience.
- Demonstrated evidence of a commitment to promoting a culture that respects and advances diversity and inclusion.
- Capacity to articulate the nature and advantages of a liberal arts education.
- Demonstrated commitment to equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Excellent skills in communication (written and oral), multicultural awareness, mastering and disseminating complex information, computer literacy (including word processing, database usage, e-mail, web searching, and reporting), and time management.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Knowledge of leading theories of academic advising and student support.
- Master's or PhD or equivalent in a liberal arts discipline, or in higher education, student affairs, college student personnel psychology, counseling, social work, or other field related to advising.
- Familiarity with liberal arts programs and university-wide student support services.
- Additional relevant higher education advising experience or experience working with college students in other capacities.
Senior Academic Advisor Required Qualifications ( to be considered for a Senior Academic Advisor position, individuals must meet the Required Qualifications as stated above AND the following qualifications below):
- At least three years of college-level advising experience.
- Thorough and nuanced understanding of curricular options, requirements, and engagement opportunities.
- Depth of knowledge in evaluating situations, developing and implementing plans to meet the needs of individual and groups of students.
- Demonstrated expertise in working effectively with students with diverse needs and backgrounds by adapting advising strategies within appropriate cultural contexts.
- Experience with mentoring, advising colleagues in specific advising tasks, policies and systems, case consultations, and the development of nuanced decision-making skills.
- Experience with creating and delivering training for staff and faculty on advising topics such as exploring student national trends and research, and the academic and career decision-making process.
- Experience creating change to impact student success.

- General office hours are Monday - Friday 8am-4:30pm with core hours between 9am-3:30pm

The Academic Advisor position is P&A, full-time year round appointment and job class Academic Professional.
Based on experience and relevant advising experience, starting salary range begins at $44,000 and can go up to $51,000.
