The City of Ventura's Community Development Department has an immediate vacancy for the City's next Code Enforcement Supervisor. If you are looking to advance in your career or work for an amazing beach City, now is the opportunity to join the team!

The Code Enforcement Supervisor works under the general direction of the Permit Services and Enforcement Manager and is responsible for overseeing the code enforcement function for the City. We are seeking candidates who have experienced with supervising the work of staff who are responsible for technical inspections and investigative work in enforcing compliance with laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to general municipal codes. This team member will provide first-line supervision within Code Enforcement and is responsible for independently responding to and resolving complaints regarding inspections and makes sound decisions in the field.

The ideal candidate for this position will have exceptional communicative skills coupled with interpersonal and exemplary customer service skills. This person will have experience supervising staff while leading by example and encouraging staff to take pride and ownership of their work efforts. The selected candidate will demonstrate a strong knowledge of code enforcement issues and practices and be effective working behind a desk and in the field. The ideal candidate will embrace and effectively implemented new ideas.

Minimum Qualifications

This position is required to complete a background verification, which includes a non-sworn personnel DOJ and FBI level Live Scan fingerprinting requirement.

A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to completion of high school supplemented by additional coursework in Fire or Construction Technology, Criminal Justice, Environmental Studies, Chemistry, Public or Business Administration or a closely related field and four years of responsible experience interpreting and enforcing codes and regulations with a governmental agency are required. Lead or supervisory experience is highly desirable.

License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver license is required.

Certificate:
  • Incumbents required to obtain a California POST PC 832 Arrest and Firearms course certificate within six months of employment.
  • California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) Certificate within six months of employment.
  • California Association of Code Enforcement Officers (CACEO) certification OR other nationally recognized Code Enforcement program certification is desirable.

Department Selection Interview :

A select number of candidates will be invited to a qualifying panel interview process that is tentatively scheduled for the week of February 28, 2022 . Select candidates will be notified of specifics after the filing deadline. Please note, given the current COVID-19 situation, initial panel interviews may be conducted via video teleconference. Selected applicants will be notified of specifics at the appropriate time.

The department selection interviews will be scheduled promptly after the panel interview process is completed.

The Eligibility List established for this classification may be used to fill other regular and temporary vacancies at the discretion of the City.
