Don's Prepared Foods is the leading manufacturer on the East Coast of prepared/ready to eat gourmet deli salads, gourmet cream cheese spreads, dips, entrée’s and more.

Don's is a family-owned business and manufactures over 130 products spanning across its three brands Don's Salads, Melanie's Medleys and Artisan Deli.

Food safety and Quality Assurance is extremely important to the Don’s.

Job Purpose: To plan, direct and coordinate various aspects of this manufacturing facility, thereby ensuring that the operations run smoothly and according to company policy. Assure compliance to SQF and Food Safety initiatives by making it part of our culture.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct supervision of R&D, Procurement, HR, Accounting/Office Managers, and IT.

Maximize product safety and quality.

Create an SQF and Food Safety culture.

Support Quality Assurance Manager in strategy designed to maintain high product and ingredient quality level. Oversight of Food Defense Program.

Provide support to SQF Practitioner making sure others are on track with SQF initiatives.

Support the QA Department and drive quality programs implemented in the plant.

Participate on the HACCP Team.

Increase plant efficiencies:

Evaluate and improve the efficiencies of current production, production planning and inventory management.

Work with President and Operations Manager to establish annual goals / focus for improvements, then work with Operations Manager to achieve improvements.

Analyze: Labor use, transportation efficiency, product yields, etc.

Evaluate new equipment.

Overall monitoring of the company departments:

Lead departmental managers.

Oversee each department’s operations and performance.

Update operations on sales initiatives.

Planning of long-term projects.

Annually review job descriptions and provide goals for improvement.

Meet with customers when required.

Food Defense:

Annually review and assess the food defense plan. Make changes as needed.

Responsible to create, initiate and report on a test of the food defense plan. Initiate any corrective actions needed as a result of the test.

Personnel/HR:

Monitor employee performance.

Approve and manage vacations of production personnel and managers.

Assist HR with employee relations/terminations when required.

Scheduling:

Understand the process of scheduling.

Participate in improving current scheduling issues/constraints.

Monthly Inventory:

Follow up with any managers not adhering to inventory process.

Crisis Plan: Annual review of Crisis Management Plan contacts to assure up to date.

Management:

Participate in the annual SQF review.

Initiate management meetings to create a cross functional team so all departments are working together rather than independently.

Product development oversight.



Qualifications & Skills:
  • Bachelor of Science
  • 5 plus years experience as Plant Manager, General Manager or Operations Manager.
  • Refrigerated/ready to eat food manufacturing experience required.
  • Must have the following certifications:
    1. HACCP certification
  • USDA/FDA and SQF experience
  • Food Safety and GMP knowledge.
  • Strong supervisory, training, analytical and problem-solving skills required.
  • Excellent communications skills, well organized and dependable.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule.
  • Able to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Ability to work in a refrigerated environment 34-38 degrees.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English a plus.

Competencies:

Strong knowledge, experience and understanding of food manufacturing.

Ability to set and enforce health / safety procedures and guidelines for operation.

Ensure compliance with all internal and external food productions regulations and legislation.

Strong HR skills to manage interviewing, hiring, terminations, employee relations, employee retention and personnel matters. Excellent managerial and supervisory skills.

Successfully manage a diverse group of employees where you can build and lead successful teams.

A well organized, dependable, detail orientated, self-directed individual with time management skills. Ability to multi-task. Remains open to other’s ideas and exhibits willingness to try new things.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to be an active listener and can relay information accurately to others. Must be able to follow instructions and solicit feedback to improve performance.

Prioritizes, plans, and uses time efficiently. Demonstrates a high level of accuracy and thoroughness, monitors own work to ensure quality and applies feedback to improve performance. Meets deadlines.

Proficient with computer-based ERP management systems for inventory control, shipping operations, and fulfillment services.
