Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Department of History at Wheaton College (MA) seeks an experienced educator to teach a survey course, directly particularly to first-year students, in Global, World, Ancient, or European history in Fall 2024.

The course will be scheduled upon hiring of the successful applicant, but likely will meet twice weekly for 80 minutes either Tuesday/Thursday mornings or afternoon or Monday/Wednesday afternoons, or thrice weekly for 50 minutes on Monday/Wednesday/Friday mornings. It is expected that the instructor will dedicate one additional hour per week to office hours.

Fall 2024 classes run from Tuesday, August 27 to Friday, December 6, with final examinations during the week of December 9–14, and final grades due on Monday, December 16.

Responsibilities of the instructor include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Teaching effectively in an in-person environment that encourages close student-faculty interactions.
• Creating a syllabus (with assistance, if desired, from the Department) to be provided to students and the Department Chair on the first day of class.
• Selecting and ordering textbooks and/or procuring other course materials prior to the start of classes.
• Teaching with an emphasis on primary text reading and analysis.
• Grading assignments within appropriate time frames.
• Holding regular office hours and being responsive to student needs.
• Communicating regularly with the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in history or related field.
• College-level teaching experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
• PhD (or ABD) in History or related field.
• College-level teaching experience.
